Step-by-Step Paper Dice

Looking for a way to make your paper dice even more special? Whether you’re using them for classroom games, role-playing, or just for fun, crafting your own dice can be a creative, easy way to add a personal touch. And guess what? It’s super simple to do!

Follow these easy steps, and you’ll have sturdy, colorful dice in no time. This is the same process I followed to create my storytime reflect and review dice.

Let’s roll up our sleeves and get started!

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper: Go for something that’s heavier than regular printer paper but lighter than cardstock. A good sweet spot is 24-65 lb (or 89-176 gsm) paper. This weight gives your dice enough sturdiness to stand up to some use but won’t make them too bulky. Bright or neon-colored paper will make your dice pop!
  • Clear glue or tape (your choice!)
  • Cotton balls (for stuffing, so your dice stay durable!)
  • A printer or markers for writing/drawing on the dice

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Print or Draw Your Dice Template: Start by printing out a simple dice template. or ready-made dice activity. Use bright or neon-colored paper to make your dice stand out.
  2. Decorate Dice: If writing or drawing on a blank template, now is the time to do it.
  3. Cut Out the Template: Carefully cut out your dice template. If you’re using scissors, take your time to follow the lines neatly—it’ll make your dice look much cleaner and sharper.
  4. Fold Along the Lines: Fold the paper along the lines to form the cube shape. If you want to add some cool designs or artwork, feel free to do so before you start folding!
  5. Add Some Durability: Before you glue the dice together, consider laminating the paper (optional, but awesome!). This extra layer will protect your dice from spills and make them last even longer.
  6. Stuff with Cotton Balls: Here’s the secret to making your dice sturdy: right before finishing the assembly, stuff the inside with a few cotton balls. This will help prevent the dice from getting squished too easily. You don’t need to overstuff them—just enough to give them a little cushion.
  7. Glue or Tape It Together: Use clear glue or tape to seal your dice into their cube shape. Clear glue is a great choice because it holds well and dries clear, but tape can be quicker if you’re in a hurry.
  8. Let Dry & Play! Once everything is glued together, let your dice dry completely (or set them aside if you’re using tape). Once they’re dry, you’re ready to roll!

Now, you’ve got your very own custom paper dice! They’re not only fun to make but also perfect for games and learning activities. Share your dice with friends, students, or family, and watch as they marvel at your crafty skills.
