Back for S’more Learning

It’s back to school season and you know what that means! A mad scramble to get everything ready for that first week of school. What to prioritize – engagement? Classroom management? Just try to hold onto your sanity?

Check out my latest bulletin board for a little inspo! And yes, I did plan my entire week around this bulletin board idea, it was just too sweet to resist!

This bulletin display was prepped as I watched King of Queens re-runs on Prime Video. The letters were printed on orange paper and cut out, the logs are construction paper, and the flames are tissue paper I traced into flame shapes.

What activities do we exactly have planned to go along with this s’mores board? Well, since you asked…

How-to Writing

  • We’ll be starting the year off with how-to writing.
  • First, select your mentor text. We are starting with Scaredy Squirrel Goes Camping. My 6 year old loves this series!
  • Draw an anchor chart checklist.
  • Compile a list together of all the things you are experts in, then select one and demonstrate how to fill out a graphic organizer using the checklist.

Make S’mores

  • You knew this was coming!
  • Ask the class if they know what a s’more is?
  • Bring out the supplies and follow your students’ step-by-step directions for building a s’more. This could turn out hilarious!

Sequencing

  • After observing the sample s’more and noting anything that should be changed, it’s their turn to sequence.
  • We’ll be sequencing the steps to make a s’more using this differentiated activity but you can use any resources you like!

After we’re done these activities we’ll move deeper into how-to writing, and discuss other types of procedures, like recipes and directed drawings.
